Use An Earthquake Map To Find Where Earthquakes Are Likely To Strike

People are very much aware of earthquakes lately, especially after the disastrous one the occurred in Haiti. In the United States the government, for the past 25 years, has been actively working on ways to monitor and develop emergency programs for cities, states and other people involved in such a catastrophe. Among their other activities they have developed an earthquake map of danger areas.

These national seismic-hazard maps have been developed by the USGS (U. S. Geological Survey), together with other NEHRP (National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program) agencies. These maps estimate future earthquakes in areas along faults(cracks) immediately under the earth’s surface. They were developed to not only limit damage but to save lives in case of an earthquake.

These maps are published by the Building Seismic Safety Council and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. They are referred to whenever there is new building proposed, to make sure that there is no danger of construction being done over an earthquake prone area. They are also used as retrofit guides to strengthen older buildings.

These maps are the basis for earthquake-insurance premiums by the various states. California is one of the states that rely on these and California Geological Survey maps to set their insurance premiums, which are rather high. Also developed by these agencies is what is called a “ShakeMap”. When an earthquake occurs it immediately produces a map of the area where the strongest shaking is occurring. In ten minutes or less, emergency agencies within that area are notified and go into action.  Make sure you read our guide on how to make your own earthquake survival kit, so you can prepare your family and home for when an earthquake hits.

The California Earthquake Center, working with the USGS has developed maps which indicate where the California earthquakes are most likely to occur. It shows very strong possibilities of action in the Los Angeles Basin and the San Francisco area. These maps were prepared in the form of guides and distributed throughout Southern California to help residents prepare their homes, families and businesses with proper protection in the event of an earthquake.

These guides have been distributed not only to residential homes, but to libraries, schools, community centers and other places frequented by the public. In 1989,1992 and 1994 there were serious quakes in California which caused a great deal of damage. In the 1989 Lorna Prieta earthquake 63 people were killed by collapsing structures. The largest one was in 1992 with a magnitude of 7.3 and caused very serious structural damage.

The development of these maps, which show where the earthquake possibilities are, has helped a great deal in land planning decisions by cities, counties and the state. When something such as highways, bridges and other such projects are proposed the first thing that is done is to look at the earthquake map to see if it is within the danger area. Prior to the development of these maps there was no way to know where the danger was located.

Maps have also been developed on a worldwide scale and their importance is becoming very well known to the governments of other countries. The U. S. Government continues to work, through these agencies, to develop methods to make the people safer during the occurrence of an earthquake. In the past twenty-five years of their existence they have made amazing advancement in the knowledge of earthquakes and their possibility in various regions.
