Papua New Guinea, the Pacific island nation, was hit by a magnitude 6.5 earthquake early Monday morning.
No damage or injury has been reported so far, according to the Associated Press, but it is unclear as to whether any significant tsunami activity is imminent. No Pacific tsunami warnings have been issued.
While Papua New Guinea is a remote island nation, it is still home to almost 7 million people.
Papua New Guinea is located in an area of high earthquake and volcano activity, known as the “Ring of Fire,” in which approximately 90 percent of the world’s earthquakes occur. While this is a significant earthquake, it is not uncommon in Papua New Guinea, or in this “Ring of Fire” zone.
